In 1911, Frederick Winslow Taylor published “The Principles of Scientific Management”, which had a profound impact on the Ford Motor Company's assembly line efficiency by standardizing complex tasks into precise, repetitive motions for workers, reducing the Model T's chassis assembly line from 12.5 to 1.5 hours.
Taylorism bore the other edge of its own sword. Workers were treated as an extension of the machine. Breaking each job into the its smallest mechanical unit stripped away the skill and creativity once born of labor, abolishing worker economy, and eventually leading to union militancy in the 1930's.
